Onward to Online Training
For the industry, training is an important aspect alongwith hiring. As educational institutions usually offer nothing more than theoretical knowhow, companies have to take up the responsibility of grooming new recruits and getting them ready for all they have to face in the corporate world. Therefore, on top of the expenses associated with hiring, there comes the additional burden of training expenses. While profile-related specific training can be best learned from seniors and qualified corporate trainers, more and more companies are looking at alternate means of training when it comes to general training such as communication, ways of dealing with clients and using certain popular software.
A solution in this regard is online training which is emerging as a productive as well as cost-effective solution. With the internet becoming an indispensable part of our lives and the multitude of tools available online, it is no wonder that online training is gaining some serious ground. With the advent of online training, the debate that is doing the rounds is whether it will completely replace face-to-face teaching in the long run. Before attempting to answer that question, a thorough examination of the potential of online training is pertinent. More posts to come on this exciting field.
Get Trained and Master Your Domain
Would you like to be known as the jack of all trades or master of a domain? As you go ahead in your profession, you have to keep this in mind. You may have a set of skills that makes you eligible for several positions. But it is always wise to select a domain that you like best and stick to it so that in a few years, you come to be regarded as one of the authorities.
Jumping jobs and exploring different avenues might sound exciting but that never allows you to settle in a particular line of work. You end up learning the basics of a lot of domains but will never be able to master any. Your growth and prestige largely depends upon your mastery, so a concentrated effort on an area of your liking is advisable. Frequent job changes and alteration of position also results in a question mark on your credibility. Looking at your records, Companies will not be able to trust your commitment. It is always more impressive to display a record of excellence along a particular line of work as opposed to dabbling in a variety of spheres.
Make your choice early in your career. Decide upon an area that you find exciting and rewarding at the some time. Equip yourself with all the skills necessary to make it big in the area of your choice and stick to it. With all the experience and expertise that you will gain, you might even consider starting your own company after a while.
Explore, Learn and Decide
Many of us, prior to looking for a job, have the impression that whatever we are doing in our classrooms and laboratories are exactly what we will be doing in professional life. In a way we view work as an extension of our student life. There is no denying that our education is equipping us with certain skills and theories which will be put to practice once we step into the professional sphere, but there are a lot of other things we need to know and be prepared for. As long as we were students, we never really knew what deadlines mean in the industry, how critical a project and its timely execution can be and how quickly we need to think and improvise. Often our services might be required for something apart from our projects and it will be expected from us that we adapt and deliver.
As the course comes to an end and thoughts of starting work dawn, it is important to research and get to know more about the functioning of different companies. A good idea about the structures of various organizations, big and small, will go a long way in giving aspirants an idea about what to expect. It is important, in my opinion, to look at the various profiles, develop an understanding of the core and added responsibilities, get to know the management and explore opportunities to grow and learn. Working for big companies will enable you to boast of a name and expose you to an assembly-line style of work but ascent will take time and the work can get monotonous. New and smaller companies can be a little disorganized and might want employees to figure things out on their own but offer flexibility and quick growth.
A decision has to be taken regarding what kind of exposure and work-experience would one like before taking up the first job. Once that decision is made, a lot of things become clear.
Gear Up for Job Fairs
Job fairs are effective means of bringing several companies and numerous job aspirants at one place. It makes things easier for both parties as companies get ready access to a good pool of manpower and candidates don’t have to run from one office to another for interviews and screening procedures. From what i have seen, job fairs have been reasonably successful over the years and it’s no surprise that more are coming your way. A BPO job fair will be arranged in Bangalore on the 25th and 26th of July whereas Hyderabad and Delhi will get to host multi-industry job fairs on the 8th and 9th of August. Reputed concerns like Wipro, HCL and so on have benefited from these fairs before and job-seekers can look forward to their participation yet again. The fairs will be arranged by Timesjobs.
Exploring Technical Writing Jobs
Time to look at another prominent and attractive opening in the domain of language and communication, namely, technical writing. A basic research reveals that almost all big and small companies in the industry have requirements for technical writers. So if you happen to be good with the English language and are looking for a job that involves writing and also exposes you to cutting edge technology and latest products launched by different companies then technical writing could be a profile you will enjoy.
Most companies would require you to write about their products, launches and other news related to their research. So you will be writing user manuals, designing brochures and working closely with the development team to form a good understanding of the offerings of your company. As a technical writer, you will be catering to all the users of your company’s products and that can be a big number. You need to remember that your audience will consist of people with and without an understanding of technology so your writing should explain things in a clear and straightforward manner.
People generally get put off by a lot of text so you will have to cultivate a skill for designing. If you take a look at the user manuals of products launched by some big names, you will see almost every page carries pictures, illustrations and the text is arranged in short paragraphs. Often buletted points are used so that the main features get highlighted. If you are trying to explain to your clients how to operate a product, it is important that you show the various processes through pictures in addition to writing the steps down. Using different font colours and formatting will make your work visually appealing. You can consider using different background colours for different sections. Needless to say that a good knowledge of MS Office and a few photo-editing software will be an added advantage.
As for the origin of technical writing, I got a surprising piece of information in the process of finding out more about it. According to Wikipedia, the practice of technical writing can be traced back to ancient Greece and the Renaissance (fourteenth to seventeenth centuries). However, the full fledged utilisation of it came into being during the first world war when a lot of technical documentation was required by the military, manufacturing, electronics and aerospace industries.
Tier 2 Woes
With increasing demand for space and manpower, the industry is gradually expanding into the Tier 2 cities in India. While there are reasons to be happy, the expansion is not without it’s fair share of problems. Earlier I had posted on the advantages metros have in terms of there being more opportunity for training and picking up required skills. Now with the rapid growth of the industry in Tier 2 cities, it is time for us to think about providing proper training to the aspirants of these cities. Otherwise, the decision to expand might just backfire on several companies. Here is a video that enunciates the issue.
Learning English:Exposure Emphasized
One of the most important things you need to remember as a BPO employee is that the people you will be calling might be very different from you and me. They are based in different countries and belong to various cultures. The way they speak and use languages are different as well. Different countries bring in certain unique words and expressions to the English language which are derived from their cultures and their native languages. While training a BPO employee, companies usually spend a lot of time familiarizing him/her with these unique expressions since failure to comprehend these might lead to a breakdown in communication.
If you are aspiring for a BPO job and looking to enhance your employability, you will do well to look at some of these unique words and phrases and make a habit of using them while speaking. I am pretty sure an expression like “It’s a lemon” will perplex most of us in India but in the US, this phrase is commonly used to describe something that is defective. Thus a good knowledge of these expressions will surely help you get ahead of competition if you are looking forward to a rewarding BPO career.
Employability in India
I was recently reading an article on rediff.com which discusses the prospects of the BPO industry in India in the coming days. According to the article, the Indian outsourcing industry has entered “a new era of growth” owing to several companies desperately wanting to cut costs and looking to outsource like never before. The article goes on to say that attrition rates have already gone down and are plummeting further.
Though the BPO job market looks promising, we have to wonder whether we have enough quality talent to meet the requirements. Companies ideally want committed candidates possessing all the basic qualifications and skills necessary for the job profile. Unfortunately, finding such talent takes a lot of effort. Infosys, a premier IT firm, hires only 1% of the over 1.5 million applications it receives annually.
Around 2.5 million graduates walk out of the many colleges in India every year- out of which around 400,000 are engineers and 200,000 IT professionals. However, according to NASSCOM, only about half of these graduates are employable. Why does this happen? There are many reasons, one of the most important being that the existing education system is not industry oriented and therefore does not prepare them.
